Class 28, June 30th, 2020

Activity 1. We check homework

Activity 2. Vocabulary

Compound nouns: Some nouns consist of more than one word. These are compound nouns. Compound nouns can be formed in different ways. The most common way is to put two nouns together (noun + noun); other common types are adjective + noun and verb + noun.

noun + noun

car park Iceland shopkeeper website

adjective + noun

blackberry grandstand greenhouse small talk

verb + noun

breakwater fall-guy go-kart runway
Writing compound nouns

Compound nouns and spoken stress

Compound nouns normally have the spoken stress on the first part:
CAR park, BATHroom, WEBsite, BROther-in-law, DOORbell, CHECK-in
However, not all compound nouns follow this rule. Some have spoken stress on the second part, especially in proper names and titles:
Mount EVerest, Prime MINister, New YORK

A good learner’s dictionary will tell you where to put the stress.

Activity 1. Check homework

Activity 2. Zoom

Will (revision)

Future with will

will + infinitive (all persons)

On the surface, using will in a sentence seems straightforward.

One is talking about the future. But the meaning of future sentences using will goes deeper than that. English speakers use ‘will’ for four different reasons: to predict a future event (It will snow in January), to express a spontaneous decision (I’ll do it. I’ll ask him out right now), to show a willingness to do something (We’ll decorate for the dance), and to make a promise (I will call at seven).

Can you tell the meaning of the following sentences?

will take you to the airport. I have nothing to do tomorrow.

will love you forever.

Our parents won’t go to the supermarket for food.

Cars and planes will use solar energy.

Tom's a really kind person; he will always help you if you need something.

I will work hard on this project until its successful finish.

Come on, I'll help you with those bags.

Activity 3. Grammar

Future with going to

Form:

verb to be (am, is, are) + going to + verb (infinitive)

I am going to stay at home

Book, page 65, act 1. Complete the examples.

Online work: follow the link, do the exercise and share your results with the class.

LINK: https://agendaweb.org/exercises/verbs/going-to-write

Activity 4. SONG

This song is included in the final credits of one of my favourite movies of all times Four Weddings and a Funeral (you should watch the movie, not the series, it will teach you lots of very British ways of insulting 😉). You are going to listen to a modern version of a very old song called Going to the Chapel.

Enjoy and in the meantime, complete the lyrics.

SOMETHING TO BEAR IN MIND: In spoken English, there is something called "connected speech". That is when we say two words, in this case going to, very fast, and we transform them into one, which you surely have heard before: "gonna". You are NOT going to hear any clear "going to" in this song.

LINK with PDF or Word Doc. for you to complete:

See you!!!

Class 7, April 16th, 2020

Activity 1. We share homework

Talk about your timeline

Activity 2. What do you want to be when you are older? (Book, page 64)

Read the quiz and choose A, B or C

If you do not have the book, here's the quiz.

Check the key on page 97. Do you agree with the conclusions? Why'/ Why not?

Activity 3. Vocabulary work

Find three phrasal verbs in the Quiz. What do they mean?

TIP: a phrasal verb is a phrase (such as take off or look down on) that combines a verb with a preposition or adverb or both and that functions as a verb whose meaning is different from the combined meanings of the individual words

Example: look with  the meaning "use your eyes and see":
"Look! I have a new computer. Do you like it?"

                after with the meaning "next":
"I go to the gym after school."
But if I combine look with after, the meaning changes:
"I always look after my little brother in the afternoon, because my mum has to work."
Here: the phrasal verb LOOK AFTER means: take care (cuidar)

Match the phrasal verbs to their meaning:(do this in your copybooks)

a. go out
b. grow up
c. try on
d.find out
e.write down
f. get on/ off

  • to discover, learn or verify something
  • to leave your house, go outdoors
  • to put on (a piece of clothing) to see if it is the right size
  • to record in written form
  • to become older, from being a child to being an adult
  • to enter or leave ( a bus, a train)

                                                                         ☝

Book, page 64, activity 5. Complete the sentences with the phrasal verbs in the list above

Activity 2 GRAMMAR VIDEO

Watch the video and pay attention to the past simple forms when we use REGULAR VERBS

When we use simple past, we sometimes have regular and irregular verbs. REGULAR verbs are very easy, when you use them in the past, you just add -ed at the end. EXAMPLE: cook - cooked
All you have to do is pay attention to some spelling rules, but they are very easy!
In this video, all the forms of the simple past are presented, but in this class you are only going to practice AFFIRMATIVE and NEGATIVE forms.

Activity 3 Let's practice regular verbs

Work online following these links. Corrections are provided by the web pages, but if you have any doubts, please text me or send me an email with your questions.

4. https://agendaweb.org/exercises/verbs/past-simple/affirmative-negative-write

EXTRA EXTRA! PRONUNCIATION WORK

The -ed ending has 3! different pronunciations:

/t/   watched sounds t
/d/  played sounds d
/id/ visited sounds id

Watch this short video, it will help; but don't worry too much about this now.

And here's some practice if you want
